The 100 Club

Urban landscape painting of the rear (artist’s) entrance to the famous music venue, The 100 Club in London. Painted in a realism art style.

The 100 Club is one of the oldest surviving London music clubs located at 100 Oxford Street, W1. The rear entrance is located at the end of a narrow mews called Berners Place, and down a rickety metal fire escape staircase into the basement club.

As a drummer, Mark used to regularly play the 100 Club and have to carry his kit up and down the staircase in and out of the venue. It was always a pleasure to play this iconic venue and he always noticed the innocuous weather beaten wooden sign on the outside wall.

It was such an honour to play on the same stage as so many legendary names; Muddy Waters, BB King, The Who, The Kinks, the Sex Pistols, The Clash, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Rolling Stones, Blur, Chuck Berry, Paul Mccartney, Toots And The Maytals, Paul Weller etc….the place is very special to Mark and his painting plays homage to the club, albeit from a less well known view. Unless you're a musician, then it is a very recognisable image.

A few years ago, the club was under threat of being closed and was thankfully saved from redevelopment to carry on it’s long illustrious history. Mark has changed the text on the red door sign from, ‘Please leave the club quietly’, to ‘Please leave club here forever’ in a plea to future generations.
