Sleazy Soho Doorway

Contemporary urban landscape of the open door to the flat of one of Soho’s sex workers. There was a time when these fairly innocuous doorways could be seen permanently open on the streets of Soho with a sign, ‘Model Upstairs’, or ‘French Polishing’ etc to subtlety advertise what could be found if entered and climb the stairs!

The painting depicts the now demolished open door of 6 Peter Street, London W1 with the sign advertising a ‘model’ and the invitation to walk up!

It’s fascinating to consider the lives of the unknown women who entered that door to climb the stairs to work.

Oil on stretched canvas - 24” × 16”

The painting is signed on the front and stamped on the rear of the canvas with the artist’s stamp and provided with a certificate of authenticity as the original piece of art.
